The gastrocnemius is found in each of the lower legs on the posterior side, thus forming the calf along with the soleus. The muscle has two heads which each having origins and insertions from approximately the knee to the ankle. Since there are a couple of heads, it attaches to both sides of the knee (medial and lateral), allowing stability. The shape of the muscle also appears to be diamond-like when it is fully developed.
