Seated calf raises

This is an exercise that occurs with weights. You sit down and attempt to raise your calf with the weights restraining your movement. The angle of your knee should never be lower than 90 degrees at all times. The gastrocnemius is almost completely inactive when the legs are at or below 90 degrees.
Standing calf raises

This machine is found at Bishop Allen and allows both the soleus and gastrocnemius to be exercised in its different movements. When standing, you start with your foot dorsiflexed, and attempt to plantarflex your foot with the weights restraining movement. The gastrocnemius is activated during the downward action.
